Parametric sensitivity of a CFD model concerning the hydrodynamics of trickle-bed reactor (TBR)
2016
Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the sensitivity of a multiphase Eulerian CFD model with respect to relations defining drag forces between phases. The mean relative error as well as standard deviation of experimental and computed values of pressure gradient and average liquid holdup were used as validation criteria of the model. Comparative basis for simulations was our own data-base obtained in experiments carried out in a TBR operating at a co-current downward gas and liquid flow. Estimated errors showed that the classical equations of Attou et al. (1999) defining the friction factors Fjk approximate experimental values of hydrodynamic parameters with the best agre…

Experimental Constraints on the Deep Magma Feeding System at StromboliVolcano, Italy
2009
International audience; New experiments have been performed on a high-K basalt (PST-9) from Stromboli volcano, Italy, to constrain the physical conditions of golden pumice magmas at their storage level and discuss their petrogenesis. Fluid-present, H2O- and CO2-bearing, near-liquidus experiments were performed at 11508C between 100 and 400MPa and under oxidizing conditions. Glasses were analyzed by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy and their H2O and CO2 concentrations compared with those in glass inclusions. Most glass inclusions cluster near the 200MPa isobar, suggesting entrapment at a depth of ~8 km. Golden pumice magmas have viscosities of 7.9 Pa s and densities of 2.48-2.57 g/cm3. Compo…
SOLID-LIQUID SUSPENSIONS IN UNBAFFLED TANKS
2009
Unbaffled stirred tanks are seldom employed in the process industry as they are considered poorer mixers than baffled tanks. However, they might provide significant advantages in a wide range of applications like crystallization processes as well as for food and pharmaceutical industries, where the presence of baffles is often undesirable. In the present work solid-liquid suspension in an unbaffled stirred tank was investigated. A novel experimental method (steady cone radius method) was devised to ease the evaluation of the minimum impeller speed for complete particle suspension (Njs). Experiments encompassed a quite wide range of particle sizes, densities and solids concentration. The Njs…
Behaviour of Extractives in Norway Spruce (Picea abies) Bark during Pile Storage
2022
The current practices regarding the procurement chain of forest industry sidestreams, such as conifer bark, do not always lead to optimal conditions for preserving individual chemical compounds. This study investigates the standard way of storing bark in large piles in an open area. We mainly focus on the degradation of the most essential hydrophilic and hydrophobic extractives and carbohydrates. First, two large 450 m3 piles of bark from Norway spruce (Picea abies) were formed, one of which was covered with snow. The degradation of the bark extractives was monitored for 24 weeks. Samples were taken from the middle, side and top of the pile. Each sample was extracted at 120 °C with both n-h…
Un modello multicriteriale per la valutazione del saggio di capitalizzazione
2011
The process of direct capitalization, while persisting in the operational context, tends to be of secondary importance in the interests of scholars in the discipline of appraisals. However, it is recognized the need for such an approach in not perfectly competition markets and/or in presence of speculative-financial phenomena that are typical of capitalistic systems. This work has explored the theme of the multi-criteria choice of capitalization rate, in the light of the speculative-financial interpretative matrix that the New economy provides to explain the intensely dynamic economic systems. The study is based on the conception of market value as the result of objective and subjective fac…

Development of an immunochromatographic assay based on carbon nanoparticles for the determination of the phytoregulator forchlorfenuron
2013
Rapid analytical methods enabling the determination of diverse targets are essential in a number of research areas, from clinical diagnostics to feed and food quality and safety. Herein, the development of a quantitative immunochromatographic assay for the detection of the synthetic phytoregulator forchlorfenuron (CPPU) is described. The competitive lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was based on the immobilization onto a nitrocellulose membrane of an ovalbumin-CPPU conjugate (test line) and on the use of an immunodetection ligand consisting of carbon nanoparticles labeled with an anti-CPPU monoclonal antibody through interaction with a secondary antibody. The presence of CPPU in horticultural…
